Braley Investigation
Braley Covered Bridge Town of Randolph, Vermont

Engineer:
Phillip C. Pierce, P.E.
Treadwell, NY

Project Description:

The Braley Covered Bridge spans the Second Branch of the White River in East Randolph, Vermont. The original structure was supported by a pair of rare half height multiple kingpost trusses. It is relatively short - with a total length of about 44 feet. It is unclear if the overhead structure was in place at the time of the original construction, but the bridge was built circa 1904. The structure was relatively weak and steel beams have supported the deck for many years, leaving the trusses to support the covering.

My specialty subconsulting assignments included leading a thorough field inspection of the bridge and an analytical review of the capacity of the timber part of the structure. The assignment included consultation on recommended repairs. The analytical work is complete in 2006. Reconstruction is not currently programmed.
