If you checked out the section of this home page about who we are, you learned about my work related activities regarding covered bridges over the past many years. I have also been very involved with public speaking engagements separate from my employment and have been working on a book and other related activities. This section of the home page is intended to keep you apprised of the latest developments.
New Manual for Covered Bridges
I have completed work for the Federal Highway Administration to develop a new Manual on Covered Bridges. The Manual is an all-encompassing compendium of engineering and construction information about covered bridges. Refer to the "Projects" section of this website for more information. You may download it from http://www.tfhrc.gov/structur/pubs/04098/ or you may ask for a free copy by contacting the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center of the Federal Highway Administration at (202) 493-3260.
More funding for covered bridges
Special Federal funding was provided for historic covered bridges via The Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) via the National Historic Covered Bridge Preservation Program. The renewal of that multiyear funding program, past in the fall of 2005 is termed SAFETEA-LU and continues that program. At this time, the details of the new program are being developed - it may include more research funding, but will definitely fund a lot more construction on covered bridges.
